Neck pain can be the byproduct of a number of other issues as well as a problem in and of itself. One of the biggest problems, aside from the discomfort, can be finding a simple but effective solution that doesn’t land you in a clinic. In order to get going, however, you are going to need to determine just what is going on.

One of the potential sources of discomfort that can go easily overlooked is how you happen to be sleeping or sitting. Behaviors that have you sitting still for several hours can produce problems that affect you over days or even weeks. For example, if you have recently purchased new pillows for your bed then you may want to consider how differently they cradle your head.

One means of resolving the issue is to avoid it entirely to begin with. It might be as simple as shifting your pillow or lying differently. In the event that your problem is brought on by staring at a computer monitor or television for hours on end, try getting up and stretching regularly. Ensuring that your spine is kept properly aligned and the muscles in your neck aren’t becoming strained with time can help avoid issues altogether.

Of course certain scenarios may prevent you from stretching or turning your head for one reason or another. Often this is the case with serious injuries resulting from car accidents or other dangerous events. Typically to recover from more serious instances you will require a neck brace in order to keep you from unintentionally making things worse.

While a brace may cause additional discomfort you will likely have to endure it to let things heal. However make sure that you take the brace off occasionally to make sure air gets to the area. Skin likes to breathe and being enclosed for a prolonged period of time can make the discomfort worse. Make sure to avoid unnecessary turning or bending, it is enough to expose the area to open air without moving.

Whether the cause has been identified or not, it is important to determine whether the issue is with the muscles and ligaments in your neck or the upper vertebrae of your spine. The latter might necessitate surgery or some other operation and potentially include prescription medication. However if it is simply a matter of strained muscles, a bit of rest should resolve the issue.

Any persistent neck pain that lasts you more than a week should get you going to a doctor’s office. Remember to remain patient with your recovery as your head and neck are very often used in daily life. Remember to stretch the related areas including your shoulders regularly in order to maintain flexibility.
